For over two centuries, scholars in Türkiye have produced a rich and sophisticated body of work across Islamic sciences and intellectual history. Yet this scholarship has remained insufficiently visible in global academic discourse, while Western and Orientalist studies have long circulated widely in Turkish translation. The Turkish Islamic Studies series (TISs) responds to this imbalance by introducing major works of Turkish Islamic scholarship to international readers through carefully supervised English translations. The series aims to foster a more reciprocal exchange of knowledge and to open Türkiye’s Islamic scholarly heritage to the world.

In Islam in the Twentieth Century, Ḥüseyin Kāzim Kadri offers a wide-ranging reflection on the intellectual, theological, and social condition of the Muslim world in the modern age. Moving from the dark periods of Islamic history and the roots of sectarian division to questions of faith, reason,morality, social order, and religious purpose, the work presents Islam as a comprehensive moral and civilizational framework.Kadri critiques sectarian rigidity, excessive kalām, sterile taqlīd, and the reduction of religion to inherited forms. Instead, he calls for a return to the spirit of revelation,reexamining īmān, freedom, equality, jihād, amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa-nahy ʿan al-munkar, qiyās, and the relation between religion and life.
